For the second straight night, East Los Angeles College baseball hosted West Los Angeles College on an evening where the temperature dipped below 50 degrees. And for the second straight night, the Huskies used their bats to heat things up.

Apparently not satisfied with scoring 12 runs in their win against West LA yesterday, ELAC upped the ante tonight: they literally doubled their run count in a 24-5 rout of the Wildcats. It's the most amount of runs ELAC has plated in a win since April of 2013.

The Pack wasted no time hunting down the Wildcats: after stranding the bases loaded in the top of the first to keep West LA scoreless, ELAC took to their half of the inning to score eleven runs. The Huskies would send sixteen batters to the plate against WLAC starter Adrian Ambriz, and hit him consistently and hard. Here's how the epic scoring went down:

Israel Espinoza lead off via single to shortstop.
Alex Sotelo tripled to right field, RBI; I. Espinoza scored.
Phillip Chaidez walked.
Moses Aguirre singled, RBI; P. Chaidez advanced to second, advanced to third on an error by ss; A. Sotelo scored.
Fernando Soto struck out swinging. (1 out)
Eli Altamiran hit by pitch; M. Aguirre advanced to second.
Daniel Quiroz tripled to center field, 3 RBI; E. Altamiran scored; M. Aguirre scored; P. Chaidez scored.
Marcus Orizaba walked (his first plate appearance of the season).
Adrian Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice, RBI; M. Orizaba advanced to second on an error by 1b; D. Quiroz scored, unearned.
Espinoza doubled to left field, 2 RBI; Adrian. Rodr scored, unearned; M. Orizaba scored.
Sotelo singled to right field, RBI; I. Espinoza scored, unearned.
Chaidez doubled to center field, RBI; A. Sotelo scored, unearned.
Aguirre singled; P. Chaidez advanced to third.
Soto hit by pitch; M. Aguirre advanced to second.
Altamiran flied out to rf, sacrifice fly, RBI; P. Chaidez scored, unearned.
Quiroz grounded out to ss. (3 out)

That's 11 runs on eight hits (four for extra bases), two walks, two HBPs and two errors... in the first inning.

In the next inning, Huskies sophomore SP Javier Solis allowed a leadoff triple to Jerrell Hightower, but would strand him by striking out the next two batters and then inducing a groundout to second. In the bottom half of the second inning, ELAC would score four more runs on a double, a single, and a fielder's choice that allowed runners to score from third and second.

West LA would break up the shutout bid later on in the top of the sixth inning: With ELAC now leading 16-0, the Wildcats would take advantage of Huskies' sophomore reliever Ayden Alvarez (making his first appearance in three weeks) to score five runs. East LA still had a healthy 11-run lead... but ultimately decided that wasn't enough cushion; they batted around in the bottom of the seventh to the tune of seven more runs, and then tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eight for the final margin.

Solis threw five shutout innings for his first win (1-1) of the season, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out nine.

HUSKY BITS

  • The last time ELAC scored over 20 runs in a win while outscoring their opponents by double figures was April 18 at LA Harbor College. The Huskies defeated the Seahawks 29-8.
  • Espinoza went 3-4 with 3RBI while scoring three runs.
  • Sotelo went 3-5 with 3RBI, also scoring three runs.
  • Chaidez, who pitched and got the win yesterday, went 2-3 with an RBI and also scoring three runs.
  • Aguirre went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Using the lopsided score as an opportunity, ELAC head coach Alec Adame ultimately subbed out all his starters. A total of 18 position players got in the game.
  • Sophomore P Nathan Allen made his first appearance of the season in the sixth inning, relieving Alvarez. He fanned four in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
  • Damian Chacon pitched a scoreless ninth for only his second appearance of the season.
