Huskies softball wins three in tourney

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies softball team won three of five games at the Golden West Tournament, March 4-6, highlighted by two redemption wins yesterday.

On Friday, ELAC (5-12) lost 3-2 to No. 10-ranked Santa Barbara City College (12-5) followed by a 4-2 win against San Bernardino College (6-18).

Yesterday, the Huskies defeated two teams they previously lost to earlier in the season. ELAC won 8-5 against Antelope Valley College (6-9) and defeated host Golden West College (5-13), 11-2, in the nightcap.

The Huskies lost 3-2 today to Southwestern College (13-8-1). ELAC scored one run in each of the first two innings.

Southwestern rallied for one run in the top of the fourth and two runs in the top of the sixth for the win.

ELAC outhit the Jaguars 6-5, but had four errors. Sophomore second baseman Breanna Takenaka (Los Altos HS) hit two singles for the Huskies.

Adding one hit each for ELAC were sophomores shortstop Alizah Mayagoitia (Ramona Convent HS) who hit a triple, pitcher Byanka Diosdado (Schurr HS), catcher Joslyn Macias (Whittier HS) and center fielder Sidney Alaniz (El Rancho HS).

ELAC lost to Antelope Valley 5-3 on Feb. 26, but got the win back with a 12-hit, 8-5 win yesterday. The Huskies built an 8-2 lead against Antelope Valley and held on to win.

After Antelope Valley rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Diosdado took the mound and closed out for the three-run win.

The winning pitcher was freshman Griselda Vasquez (Bell HS) who led the Huskies in hitting with a double and two singles.

The Husky offense added four more doubles, which came from Mayagoitia, right fielder Julie Muñoz (Warren HS), left fielder Sujey Zamudio (Bell HS) and first baseman Ashley Day (Alhambra HS).

 In the Golden West win, it was 2-2 after one inning, 4-2 in favor of ELAC after two and 6-2 after three innings. ELAC scored five insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Huskies smashed 13 hits. Diosdado led the Husky hits with a home run. Vasquez hit a triple and Day a double. Hitting two singles each were Macias, Alaniz and Zamudio.

In the San Bernardino Valley win on Friday, ELAC had a wild three-run bottom of the fourth inning. The Huskies outhit the Wolverines 7-6.

Diosdado was the winning pitcher and Zamudio let the seven-hit attack from seven Huskies with a double.

In the Santa Barbara one-run loss on Friday, the Gauchos scored three runs in the second inning. ELAC scored one run each in the bottom of the second and sixth innings, but it was not enough.

Sophomore Kryssann Baltazar (Alhambra HS) hit one of ELAC's nine hits with a single. Muñoz led the Husky offense with two hits, one a double.

The Huskies continue South Coast Conference contests this week with two home games on Tuesday and Thursday. Both games begin at 3 p.m.
