Out of the Cellar: Huskies Place Fourth at SCC Championships

by Cerwin D Haynes

It's fair to say that before this season, East Los Angeles College men's cross country has been virtually non-existant in any sort of rankings or placements. While the women have made strides over the past few seasons, the men have been slow to get out of the preverbial basement of the South Coast Conference.

Thankfully, the men of the Pack have begun to find some footing again. At today's SCC Championships ELAC placed fourth (141 points), edging both El Camino and Long Beach City (146 points apiece). Late-arriving freshman Angel Santiago showed he was worth the wait, finishing 35th - the highest individual Huskies' finisher post-Covid.

"It's been years since our men haven't been at the very bottom," said head coach Milton Browne. "The women's side is further along, but the men are coming."

Today's results are further evidence that ELAC has shown signs of life this season. Back in September, the men finished tenth overall at the Golden West Central Park Classic - their first top-10 finish in at least a decade.

The Huskies will run on Friday Nov 7 at the SoCal Regional Championships in San Diego. Coach Browne feels his guys are "on the bubble" of state contention, so he'll be looking for some PRs from his group.
